Lucky in Love
Chapter 1

Ryo sighed as he climbed up the last flight of stairs to his apartment, he was in good shape but this was his fourth trip up the un air conditioned stairway today. How did the elevator know to break down on a day when someone on the top floors had to make a lot of trips and haul a lot of stuff? Dee had called it Murphy's law before turning over and going back to sleep. Ryo would have asked Dee to help if the man hadn't just gotten off of his third double shift in as many days.
Ryo was coming back from having carted Bikky and way too many of his possessions to a high school parking lot out in Long Island. His adopted son had gotten a scholarship for a special four and ½ day Basketball camp out in Pennsylvania, it was a big enough deal that Ryo had even agreed that Biks could miss three days of school for the experience. But as most of the other kids going from New York had to pay for the privilege, the school bus had left from somewhere out in the boonies that looked more like the town that Ryo had grown up in then one of the five boroughs of New York City. The cab that he and Biks had taken out there was air conditioned but smelled of cigarette smoke, then Ryo had decided to take the subway back and had ended up waiting for 37 minutes in an oven of a subway station in Brooklyn for a train that didn't run on Wednesdays at noon. All told, Ryo had left his apartment 5 and ½ hours ago, 6 hours ago if you counted from the first trip down the stairs with Bikky's junk.
Ryo fumbled with his keys just wanting to get into his relatively cool apartment. At least he had three of the next four and ½ days off. Dee had all five days off after the doubles he had just worked. Ryo himself had only had to call in a few favors to get his days off. Dee had long since stopped making fun of Ryo being too nice at work, once he had seen what being too nice could get them.
Getting to door open and then closed behind him, Ryo rested against the door while dropping his keys into their bowl to his right. The keys didn't make the normal clicking sound when they landed. The bowl had all of their keys in it as well as the pocket change the Dee always dumped out at the same time. Ryo looked down wondering if a dollar bill had gotten mixed up in the change. Instead he saw a yellow post-it staring back at him.
"Check the Fridge Door" was all it said in Dee's scrawl - actually it was the neater version of Dee's scrawl as if his lover had been concerned for once about his note being misunderstood.
Looking to his left, Ryo saw there was actually and identical note on the door next to his head, peering forward into the living room, Ryo saw a suspicious yellow square stuck to his spot on the couch.
Dee really wanted Ryo to look at the fridge door. This made Ryo nervous.
Dee was a very upfront and communicative partner, at work and at home and even in bed. When there was something like these notes it meant whatever was on the door of the fridge was a surprise. The NYPD detective who had been in firefights and was an expert in hand to hand combat and explosives, tiptoed gingerly into his kitchen.
As soon as Ryo cleared the door jamb and could see the refrigerator he knew what this was all about. However, having his suspicions confirmed only made him more nervous.
On top of the note from the camp with Bikky's schedule were two more post-it notes, these with a lot more writing on them. Next to the post-it notes and under a magnet shaped liked a banana were a number of torn scraps of orange paper.
Ryo sighed, though it came out more ragged rather then relaxed, and he opened the fridge to grab a bottle of juice. Ryo managed to avoid reading the post-it notes and scraps of paper while he poured and replaced the juice and then grabbed a baggy with cold pizza in it. He sat down at the kitchen table with his back to the fridge.
He knew exactly what the orange scraps of paper said and had a good idea about what the post-its said. He didn't have to look at either of them, really to make his decision. What he did need to do was calm down, rinse out the taste of New York subways and take in some sustenance. If he was going to agree to what was on the fridge, he was going to need to carbo load.
One thing that both Bikky and Dee liked to do was play poker. They also both liked to play against Ryo as, in their words, Ryo couldn't bluff if his life depended on it. This rather pricked at Ryo's pride as in his line of work as a homicide detective there were times when his and Dee's life did depend on making some perp believe something that wasn't necessarily true. Dee assured him that this was different.
But what Ryo really did enjoy was spending time with his two favorite boys, especially when they were so involved in something that they would forget to bicker.
One night a couple of weeks ago Dee and Bikky had been having an all out poker thow-down for the change out of the key bowl. Ryo had actually had a bit of luck that night, winning a buck fifty for himself.
After Biks had gone to bed, Ryo and Dee had kept playing. To give Dee credit he had not suggested they change the stakes for maybe another half hour or so. The new stakes had started out with things like "Breakfast in bed" and "Double Vacuum the Whole Apartment (Ryo didn't feel it was clean after just one pass but who had time for two)".
Ryo had known from Dee's body language that it was going to get raunchy at some point so when he got a 3, 4, and 6 of spades he had thrown caution to the wind and, on the back of a piece of an orange flier wrote "1 guaranteed night as catcher".
They basically traded off 50/50 these days though they didn't do anything like draw up a chart, but they still used the promise of catching as a commodity - as in if you do all your own paper work I'll catch for a week.
Dee's eyebrows went up into his permanently disheveled bangs then his face morphed into his shit eating grin. On his pad of paper, his work notebook, he wrote "Winner picks three toys" and threw it in the pot.
Ryo picked up Dee's note and tore it into little tiny pieces before throwing it away. Dee deflated. Then Ryo wrote "Winner picks three new toys" on a scrap of the orange paper and put it into the pot. At Dee's happy but questioning look Ryo said, "I don't want us to miss cleaning up one of these chits and then have Biks find it. We will be less likely to overlook an orange scrap of a paper."
Dee nodded as his grin got even bigger, "Good idea, babe. Though those are not the sort of thing I am going to misplace - if I win."
Ryo asked for two cards and got the 5 of spades and 2 of hearts. Ryo put in "1 night no questions asked."
Dee put in a simple "A FUN night out."
Ryo raised a "Somebody is a bad boy."
Dee put in a "Camera" then called - he had a flush.
When Ryo asked if he had just been hustled Dee had just smiled and pulled him down on top of the cards for a deep kiss.
That night Dee had taken out his digital camera. A week later they had gone to a Mardi Gras celebration at Bill and Ted's shop. They had also done some toy shopping while they were there.
They were 4 scraps of orange paper under the banana shaped magnet.
Finishing his pizza, Ryo went to get another helping of juice and took down the post-it notes. After having poured his glass and replaced the bottle, Ryo sat again with his back to the fridge to read.
"With RR gone (RR was Dee-eze for rug rats, i.e. Bikky) would like to do one/more of these ==> - yr choice," said the top note.
"Knock on Bedrm door & let me know. If is a "GO", then get ready," said the second note.
Ryo stared at the post-its while he finished the juice. Then he let out another ragged sigh and got up to rinse out the glass and put it on the draining board.
Ryo stood in front of the fridge and lifted the banana magnet; 4, no 5 pieces of orange paper fluttered down into his hand. Tucked under the other 4 notes was the note that said "Camera" on it, to which Dee had added a smiley face.
So Ryo had:
• Camera :)
• Winner picks Use 3 new toys (Dee had added the word "Use")
• Somebody is a bad boy
• 1 night Guaranteed Catcher
• 1 night No questions asked
The problem was, they all seemed to fit together.
