Prologue

Couldn’t save you from the start
Love you so it hurts my soul
Can you forgive me for trying again
Your silence makes me hold my breath
Time has passed you by

--Within Temptation (Forgiven)

The scent of sweet smelling incense coiled through the warm air as he took a long draw from Yuuko’s crack pipe. Well, it wasn’t really a crack pipe, but certain crazed fans would laughingly joke and say that’s what it was. He didn’t like them very much. Their wishes were silly and got on his nerves just a little bit. They could never really make up their minds about what they wanted. Their minds were scattered all over the place and they said Yuuko smoked a crack pipe. Yeah, right. Yuuko would never smoke crack. Crack is whack! She smoked better, and now, so did he.

He could hear the adorable twins racing down the long hall to greet a visitor, who had just stumbled into the shop. The two of them sounded really excited. He took another draw from the exquisite pipe and sighed from where he lounged in the smoke filled room. The sweet tasting smoke exited his nose and mouth as if he were a lazy dragon.

Black Mokona was curled up in his silken lap, snoozing ever so silently. Like him, the little furball missed Yuuko terribly. The little guy didn’t drink as much anymore either, but he never turned it down when it was being offered either.

“This way,” he could hear the twins say as one light voice. “The master has been expecting you.”

His petal soft lips twitched upwards just a smidgeon. Master, indeed. He missed Yuuko. She was so much better at this than he was. He missed how she would constantly pick on him and have him do annoying tasks. He missed the crazy drunkard.

The bamboo doors before him were painted with black butterflies. They slid gently open and he turned his head to take a look. A tall man stood in the pale light. He was dressed in a white t-shirt with a very strange design and wore faded jeans that hugged his hips. His skin was brown and his blond hair was bleached almost white from the sun. He had incredible blue eyes. The man dropped his travel bag on the floor with a thud.

Watanuki sat up and his elaborate robe fanned and billowed out like wings belonging to a monarch butterfly. He gently put down Yuuko’s pipe, being careful not to disturb Mokona’s rest. The way he moved was fluid and graceful. It would make Yuuko so proud.

“There is a wish within your heart,” he said, looking at him with mismatched eyes. One was gold, the other bluer than ice under moonlight. “That is the reason why you stand before me.”

He held Mokona like a kitten in his arms as he got to his feet. The incense seemed to slither like serpents around his lithe form as he stood there.

The blond man suddenly looked exhausted, and instead of speaking, he fell to his knees with what sounded to be a defeated growl. His golden mane broke free from its leather ponytail holder, making him look like a lion.

“You’re not him,” the man sighed. His voice was deep and his accent was American. He definitely looked American. “You’re not the count.”

Watanuki blinked. No, he was not a count. He was Kimihiro Watanuki, born April first.

“Yo,” a voice came from behind the haggard blond, who looked as though he were about to cry in frustration and something else. “I brought these fresh vegetables you asked for.”

“Doumeki!” The twins squealed, dancing around him, singing little happy songs as they did so. “You’re home!”

“I don’t live here,” he said.

Both girls giggled. “Welcome home!” They sang.

Mokona’s pretty eyes popped open. “Did you bring the booze?”

Watanuki cocked a thin brow and the champion archer nodded.

The blond man didn’t even blink when Mokona jumped from Watanuki’s arms and into his lap. “You look like you need a good drink and a nice nap,” Mokona told him. “How about it, buddy? Stay for dinner.”

Watanuki watched in silence.

“Once upon a time,” the blond kind of smirked, picking Mokona up like a stuff teddy bear. “This kind of shit would have freaked me the hell out.”

Doumeki snorted, but covered both twins’ ears at such language. It was funny to Watanuki, because the little girls were far older than the both of them.

Mokona giggled.

“What is your name?” Watanuki asked the man.

“Leon,” he answered, looking up at him with those sad blue eyes. “Leon Orcot.”

Watanuki nodded. “And your date of birth,” he whispered like the wind, causing Mokona to look over at him.

Leon’s smooth brow wrinkled. “I…don’t remember.”

Watanuki chuckled lightly. “Good answer. Welcome to Lady Yuuko’s shop, Leon Orcot.”

“Yo,” Doumeki deadpanned. “Hungry.”

Watanuki strolled passed the enthralled blond, who was playing with a giggling Mokona. He stopped and stood before his tall friend as the twins moved aside. He reached for the plastic bag, stood on the very tips of his painted toes, and gently kissed Doumeki on the cheek.

“Welcome home,” he lightly whispered in his ear, taking the bag from his bigger hand.

The dark headed jock softly smiled. “I want steamed leeks to go with my soba.”

Watanuki nodded. “Moro, Maru, come help me.”

The twins hugged Doumeki around his waist and bounced off after their Watanuki.

“You and Mokona can look after my exhausted guest,” he called over his shoulder. “The poor man looks like he hasn’t slept in days. I’m sure he’ll collapse at any second.”

“Don’t forget my beer!” Mokona called, just as the blond collapsed on his face, snoring like a freight train.

Watanuki smiled. He was happy that some things didn’t change. If certain things had changed too much, he would have lost himself completely.

He had given the handsome jock his answer. He loved him and all the rude quirks about him and that was all that mattered. If it hadn’t been for Doumeki, he would have gone crazy when Yuuko had vanished right before his tear filled eyes.

“Watanuki kissed Doumeki,” Maru said.

Moro nodded. “Does this mean Doumeki will stay with us forever?”

Watanuki let his silk robe fall away from his milky white flesh with a soft hiss from behind the painted screen. He peeked around the corner at the two of them and winked.

“As if I’d ever let him go.”

To Be Continued.
