Coming Home

Yamato aimlessly stared at the clock on the wall. His professor had been drabbling for close to an hour about how important trigonometry was for everyday use. Just as Yamato thought he could no longer hold his eyes open, the professor glanced at the clock and let the class go. Yamato tried not to bolt right out the door, but he did so anyways. It was the last class of the week and Yamato was looking forward to the weekend. Taichi and him were going back home to Odiba to pick up their stuff. Although they had been living in the dorms at college not far away in mainland Tokyo, they had been saving for a place of their own. It was a small two bedroom apartment not far from their campus. Although Yamato may have bolted out the class room he didn’t run to his dorm room, people running on campuses stuck out. Yamato didn’t want to stick out. The last thing he needed was somebody to recognize him and stop him for an autograph or a favor. The Teenage Wolves were still together and playing the college crowd now. It was almost the end of their first year at college but already they had played at all of the universities in Tokyo.

Yamato slid his card key at the front door of building and opened the large heavy metal door. Sometimes Yamato couldn’t decide of the heavy door was more to keep people out or in, but this time the thought never occurred. Yamato flew up the step one, two three at a time. As many steps as his long slender legs could carry him. He reached his floor and opened another door, this one light and mainly for show. He briskly walked down the hall way, ignoring the ugly mustard brown carpeting like he always did. As he rounded the corner, he nearly bumped into one of his neighbors. A tall skinny fellow, whose brown glasses matched the brown eyes they enhanced, that is when his black hair wasn’t covering them. “Are you that excited to move out Yamato?” Yamato’s neighbor cried out. Yamato, already half way down the hall and pulling his card key from his pocket again returned, “You have no idea.” Yamato slide his cardkey down the electronic lock on his door. He opened the door and quickly entered.

“What took you so long Matt? The train leaves in a little over half an hour.” Taichi asked Yamato, who was already digging in his closet for his duffle bag. Finding it he tossed it on his bed, he then moved over to his dresser.

“Sorry Akihiko, caught me in the hall. I swear that kid can talk a person’s ear off. “ Yamato said, while grabbing shirts out of his dresser ,already neatly folded they fit easily into his duffle bag. Yamato then opened up the next drawer and pulled out a couple pairs of pants. The next drawer was filled with boxers and socks. Yamato grabbed a few pairs of each and stuffed them in his bag also. So that was that, in a blink of an eye, Yamato was packed and heading out the door. Taichi grabbed his own bag off his bed and followed his taller roommate.

After a quick and uneventful walk to the train station, Yamato and Taichi were on the train heading for Odiba. Yamato and Taichi were excited, they hadn’t been home for a few weeks, even though they lived only a few minutes away. The term was coming to an end, and with that came lots of studying and term paper writing. So they had been focusing more on school, but not this weekend. This weekend was theirs. Not only were they excited about going home, it was also who was at home. Both of their younger siblings, Takeru and Hikari were going to help them move. Not only that but Jyou was taking a break from Medical School, and Koushiro was taking time away from the College of Technology to help as well. Sora was also coming from another University on the other side of Tokyo. The Younger generation was also going to help them move, which Daisuke was excited about seeing and helping out his mentor. The only one that couldn’t make it was Mimi, who was still stuck in America, but that didn’t stop her from sending messages of encouragement and promises of gift basket.

As the train rolled to a stop Yamato and Taichi stood up anxious to get out the doors and to the bus stop. They were only a few minutes long bus ride and another short walk from the Ishida Apartment which, was only another couple minutes walk to the Kamiya apartment. As Yamato and Taichi walked to the bus stop, they looked around at the familiar surroundings. It felt like only yesterday when they and their digimon were fighting for their lives against Myotismon’s henchmen in the very streets they were walking by. Their worries had changed now, now they were no longer worried about things that went bump in the night. No they had conquered those bumpers years before and the worlds were still in peace. Instead their new worries dealt more with passing writing class, or if the milk in the refrigerator would go bad before it was finished. While still lost in thought they arrived at the bus stop. Yamato was the first to break the silence, “It feels good to be home doesn’t it?”

“Yeah, the only thing I’m not looking forward to is my Mom’s cooking. I don’t think my stomach will be able to handle it. It’s been over a month since it was subjugated to such torture.” Taichi replies patting and rubbing his belly.

“Well I’m sure Dad wouldn’t mind if you came over and had dinner with us. I’m cooking.” Yamato said with a smile.

“That’s because you’re always cooking Yamato. I honestly don’t know how your Dad has been surviving with you gone.”

“I make dinners and leave them in the freezer. But he’s not that bad of a cook really. In fact he taught me lots of what I know. He just doesn’t want to put effort into cooking anything, especially after having to work for over 14 hours a day. So what do you say, coming for dinner or not?”

“Some other time Yamato, I may not be able to stomach what my Mom will be making, but I’ll be able to stomach the company.” The words were out of Taichi’s mouth before he even realized what he said could be taken offensively.

“Are you saying that my Dad and I aren’t good enough company for you all of a sudden Taichi?” Yamato asked crossing his arms and glaring at Taichi.

“I’m sorry Yamato that came out wrong. I meant that although my Mom’s cooking may taste horrible, she’s still my mother and I want to spend time with her and the rest of my family. Get what I mean?”

Yamato dropped his arms, and put his hands in his pockets and shrugged, “Whatever.” He then cast his gaze down the street and saw the bus creeping towards them. “Bus is coming.”

The bus ride felt long and awkward, as an uncomfortable silence was still in the midst of the best friends turned roommates. As the bus neared their stop, Yamato looked at Taichi. Seeing Taichi in what appeared to be a state of thought, Yamato reached over and pulled the cord, to signal the bus driver to stop. Soon the bus came to a sudden stop, thrusting all of its passengers forward. Taichi and Yamato shuffled out the small door towards the back of the bus along with a few other passengers. As they started to walk down the street Taichi broke the silence. “I’m sorry Yamato. I didn’t think about what I was saying I just said it, and it all came out wrong.”

Yamato turned his head towards his friend. “It’s ok Taichi. We all screw up sometime. Some just more often than others.” Yamato said the last few words with a large grin on his face.

Taichi gave Yamato a slight punch to the shoulder. “Watch it Yamato.” Taichi said with a scowl, which lasted all but a second before it was replaced with a large smile. “It is so nice to be back home, I don’t know why we ever left.”

Yamato turned his head back down the road, he could see his father’s apartment building in the distance. Yamato cleared his throat and did his best impersonation of Mrs. Kamiya, “Because now Taichi, you need to see what the world holds outside this little community. There’s so many things to learn out there. In fact, while I was walking past a market the other day, I learned a new recipe for liver and turnip popsicles.”

Taichi’s stomach let off a loud growl. Taichi grabbed his stomach. “Don’t even talk like that Yamato, your giving me a stomach ache just thinking about it.” They both let out a loud laugh, and before both of them realized it they were standing in front of a tall apartment building. “So we’ll meet here in the morning for breakfast before we all get started?” Taichi asked staring up towards the middle of the building.

“Yeah, you told everybody to be here by eight if they wanted breakfast right?” Yamato questioned Taichi.

“If not that will leave more food for me.” Taichi said with a laugh, “See you tomorrow.”

“Bye Taichi.” Yamato stood there and watched as his friend walked down the street by himself, his duffle bag bouncing on his side with every step. He then turned his eyes back to the building and walked towards the elevator.

Yamato stepped into the elevator and pushed his floor. He turned around and looked out the large glass window as he left the ground. At the sound of the ding, Yamato turned around and walked down the aisle, occasionally looking over the railing to the ground below. He reached a door that was so familiar to him, one he saw everyday for most of his life. It always said goodbye to him when he left for school, and greeted him when he came home, but now the door was just a door. He and the door had drifted apart. Yamato pulled the keys out of his pocket and put it in the lock, but found that the door was already unlocked. Yamato thought it was odd since his father wouldn’t be home from work yet. As Yamato walked into the apartment, he noticed that it looked like the normal dump it usually was. Not a piece of garbage out of place. “Well maybe Dad was in a rush to get out of here this morning and forgot to lock the door.” Yamato said to himself. As he walked to his room he slumped his bag off his shoulder and into his hands. As he opened bedroom door he saw a figure lying on his bed. “Takeru?”
