Alphas and Omegas

It was snowing lightly on the seemingly endless plains, covering them in a blanket of white, covering any features and leaving the plains looking even more endless. The only variations in the scenery were some distant mountains and a few lone trees. Except for the windswept snow, nothing seemed to be moving.
Finding themselves within this bleak landscape were four very hungry wolves.

“This sucks on ice…”
“Say that one more time and we’re leaving you behind Hige.”

“This is no time for joking Hige!”

While Hige and Kiba were arguing, Tsume lay down in the snow with a deep sigh. Tōboe quickly joined him.
“Why are they always fighting over nothing?” Tōboe asked as he covered his ears. “I hate it!”
“Relax runt, nothing wrong with a good fight.”
“But what if they hurt each other?”
“They wouldn’t go that far, trust me.”
“Why not?”
“Hige wouldn’t want to risk winning.”
“I don’t get it…”
“If Kiba and Hige were to fight and Hige were to win, however small that chance may be, Hige would become our leader. Our alpha.”
Tōboe shuddered. “That wouldn’t go well… But isn’t Kiba our leader forever? Can any one of us just challenge him?”
“Technically speaking, yeah. I don’t want to be the alpha, though, nor does Hige.”
“But… their fights have been getting worse every time.”
“That… I think has another reason.”
“What then?”
“Well… You may be a bit too young to notice, but we haven’t really had any females around for a while.”

Tōboe looked at Tsume in confusion. “I don’t get it. What’s that got to do with Kiba and Hige fighting?”
“I’ll explain later. They’re coming this way.”
“Ah!” Tōboe quickly turned around to see Kiba and Hige walk towards them, both looking highly frustrated and annoyed. Kiba was the first to talk.
“We need food. We can’t go much further with eating.”
Tsume sneered. “How do you suppose we do that? We haven’t seen a single animal in days.”
“We need to start looking for some. I suggest we split up in two teams.”
Hige sighed deeply. “I should have stayed in the city. At least they had hotdogs.”
Kiba snarled at him. “Shut up Hige! Tsume, you take Tōboe and go west. Hige and I will go east.”
Tōboe looked worried, afraid Kiba and Hige would fight for real without Tsume and him nearby. “Kiba? Wouldn’t it be better if I go with you?”

Tsume quickly interrupted, though, giving Kiba the opportunity to ignore Tōboe and leave with Hige. “Let them be Tōboe. Come.”
Tsume took off fast, making Tōboe run to catch up to him. For a long time, they just ran and ran in silence, until finally Tsume halted.
“Tsume? Did you find prey?”
“No, I just figured we rest for a bit while I teach you some more about how to live in a pack.”
“Ah, I see!”
Tōboe sat down and listened carefully, not wanting to miss a single word of the important information coming his way.
Tsume just grinned inwardly at the kid’s enthusiasm. “All right, packs have three ranks: Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. Alphas are the leaders, Omegas are the Youngest and least experienced, Betas fall in-between them.”
“So… Kiba is our Alpha, right?”
“Exactly, and you would be an Omega.”
“Ah, I wanna be a Beta!”
“You’ll have to prove your worth first.”
“How? Does it involve fighting?”

Tōboe sounded a bit scared, but too curious not to ask.
“Well, yes. It usually does. You either have to prove yourself a good hunter, or defeat someone of a higher rank.”
“Like you or Hige…?”
“Unless you want to take a chance at becoming Alpha.”
Tōboe entertained that thought, but quickly realised the many, many downsides. “No thanks. Maybe being Omega isn’t all too bad after all…”
“Heh, well, as Omega, you need to know how to show your submissiveness to the higher-ranking wolves.”
“All right, how do I do that?” Tōboe immediately became exited again, hoping to learn something that would impress, or at least please, Kiba and Hige. Well, Kiba… Okay, also Hige. A bit.

Tsume got up and motioned Tōboe to do the same. “To show submissiveness, you should lower your body and draw your ears back.”
“You mean like this?” Tōboe asked, before doing as he was told to do.
“Exactly, now the dominant wolf will acknowledge you by coming closer and you must greet him by licking his face.”
Tōboe jumped up in shock and embarrassment. “Eh? Are you serious?”
“Of course, is something wrong?” Tsume asked, knowing exactly what was going on and laughing inside.
“Well… I… I guess not…”
“You do want to know how to properly greet everyone, right runt?”
Upon hearing that word, Tōboe found his fighting spirit again. “Of course! I can do this!”
“Good, then show me.”

Tōboe got back into position, lying on the ground with his ears back, as Tsume came close enough for Tōboe to lick him. He hesitated at first, but managed to get over his embarrassment and give Tsume a quick lick on his nose.

“Say, Tsume?”
“What is it runt?”
“Why did Kiba and Hige go off hunting together if they were fighting? Wouldn’t it have been better to team up differently?”

“What do you mean? Does it have to do with the reason their fights have been getting worse? Because… there are no females around?”

“I still don’t get that…”

Tsume lay down and looked at Tōboe, studying him intently. “You’re too young—”
Suddenly Tōboe lashed out. “You keep saying that! I’m not too young to fight! I’m not too young to hunt or to keep up with you! Stop treating me like a cub!”
“You are a cub!”
“I turned two almost two months ago!”
Tsume was silent for a moment, suddenly seeing Tōboe in a new light. “You’re that old already?”
An air of pride and victory enveloped Tōboe. “I am! So stop calling me a runt and a cub!”
“You must be a late-bloomer then.”
Tōboe’s air immediately dissipated. “Eh? Why? I’m just as adult as you guys!”
“Yes, you hunt and fight and do all the other things we do, to varying degrees of success—”

“—but, you seem to be missing one thing all adults have.”
“And that is?”

Tōboe fell silent and stared at Tsume in shock and embarrassment.

“Then what about Hige?”

“Aren’t you frustrated? If Kiba and Hige are, you must be too, right?”

“You know, if you want… We could… Like Kiba and Hige…”
Tsume looked up in surprise. “I don’t think you have a clear picture of what that entails.”

“What is that?”
