Introductions

Chapter 1: Introductions
Author's Notes: The last chapter was all just a dream. Don't worry, most of the chapters in this story are going to be written in a more normal writing style.

This story is going to take place over three 'arcs:' Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. Pokémon from these three regions will be making primary appearances, though I'll probably take one or two from the Sinnoh region. As for the newest region (Black and White version,) well... The official canon of the series says that it's so far seperated that pokemon from other regions don't appear there naturally (or something like that.) So, the reverse is likely true.

On with the story!

-------------------

Sunlight streaked through a window, slowly awakening a figure in a twin sized bed. He sat up, rubbing sleep away from his bright purple eyes. His short black hair was ruffled from a fitful sleep. His skin was pale enough that his veins looked darker than normal against his skin. Right now he was wearing a pair of black sweats, allowing one to see his ribs.

He'd had the dream again. The same as always, and, yet, always different. There'd been a mountain this time, and the beast had been in the form of a giant bird. He picked up a black notebook from his bedside, writing quickly. 'June sixteenth: Mountain, bird, rain, and lightning. Captured. Gold and white ball.'

Before this entry were several others, all styled just like that one. He'd confined it down to so few words to conserve on notebooks. This was his fifth. He'd started writing in this short, punctual style during his second.

Slowly he stood, opening his dresser as he did. A shirt entered his hand and he pulled it on. It was dark purple, with a dark blue eye on the front. He padded out of his room, mind working furiously. He'd been made an offer by professor Oak the day before, and he still hadn't quite decided one way or another.

Oak wanted him to go on a journey. Not the standard Kanto region gym challenge style journey (all though that would most ceretainly be part of it.) No, he had been asked to travel through the three regions south of Sinnoh.

Considering that the trip through Kanto could take a few months if you didn't take the gym challenge, it would be quite an impressive feat to go through Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. Not just going through, but taking the gym challenges, as well as the Elite Four battles.

He padded through the hallway, into the kitchen. He made a bowl of cereal, took it into the living room. He picked up a newspaper, grabbed the remote, and shoveled cornflakes into his mouth.

He needed to make this decision soon. Oak was giving him a limited offer. He would get one of the 'starter' pokémon to join him on the journey, and was holding them all on reserve, which meant that kids who should start their journeys wouldn't be able to.

It was going to be a tough choice. He had grown up in Pallet town, or at least he'd been there as long as he could remember. At about the time he was seven, there'd been some... incident. Nobody was willing to discuss it with him. He just knew that there had been some sort of explosion, and it had somehow wiped his memory, as well as doing... other things to him.

Ten years. He'd never left the town. With a sigh, he made his decision. Standing, he put his bowl away, put his shoes on, and walked out the door. He headed into Oak's lab quietly, scanning around for the professor. He found him in the back, examining the three choices of starter.

The boy made a bit of noise to anounce his presence. Oak instantly straightened.

"Dephlion, good to see you," the elder man said cheerfully.

"How's it going, professor?" the boy, Dephlion, asked quietly.

"It's going all right. I'm just making sure the pokemon are healthy enough to go on the journey."

"Mind if I give them a look? I need to decide which one will be my partner." Even though he said it with a smile, his eyes were very serious.

"Then you've decided."

Dephlion nodded. "Yes, sir. I need to expand my horizons. This is the perfect opportunity for that."

"Very well. Go ahead and check them over." The professor made a sweeping gesture. "I'll just step outside so none of you are nervous."

"All right." As soon as Oak stepped out, Dephlion turned his full attention to the three pokemon.

The first one in line was a Squirtle, looking half-asleep, despite it being nearly noon. Apparently it was very laid back. While he didn't want a partner that would be too hyper or nervous, he wanted to make sure that it could get serious in a tough situation. "Straighten up," he commanded. The turtle just stared at him vacantly with blue-green eyes.

He quickly turned to look at the second creature, a Bulbasaur. It was sitting, studying him, its red eyes going over every inch of his frame. A very analytical creature. He reached a hand out to it and was surprised when it jumped back. Analytical, but also timid. It would take him a while to gain its trust, and even once he did, it would have a tough time being out in the open where he would want to keep it.

He then focused on the last creature in line, and was pleasantly surprised. The Charmander was leaning against the wall, its tail wrapped around to the front of its waist, its short arms crossed over its chest. It watched him with bright orange eyes. It wasn't quite as laid back as the Squirtle, but it wouldn't totally stress him out. As he reached a hand out to it, it pushed off the wall, taking a ready stance. Not as nervous as the Bulbasaur, but still not trusting of a complete stranger. This was good.

He held his hand out, and the lizard smacked his palm in a rough equivelant of a low five. "I'm Dephlion. I need someone extremely loyal, who, once we become better acquainted, would go through Hell and back for me. Are you the one, little guy?"

He was once again surprised when the Charmander turned its back on him and strode towards the window of the room. It climbed up onto the table, looking through the glass at the fields behind the lab.

Turning, it looked him directly in the eye, and smirked, picking up its pokéball and holding it out to him.

All right, here we go. 1000 words, which is pretty good for me. I'm sure I'll only get better from here. Please review with constructive criticism. For an example of constructive, look at the first review of the story. Not nasty about it, giving me a good opinion of what I could do differently to make it more bearable for my readers.
